You’re A StageMama If… (The Summer Edition)

8.

You’ve successfully turned your football-loving, pubescent middle school son into a “Glee”-loving, show tune singing star.  Never mind those pictures of Kristen Chenoweth you found under his bed. It’s all good.

7.

Five minutes in to “Shrek: Forever After” you realize your seven year old, dyxlexic neighbor on Ritalin could have written a better ending for the iconic characters.

6.

You still get teary-eyed thinking of the Sondheim clip in Broadway’s “Sondheim On Sondheim” where he spoke of the letter his mother sent him on his fortieth birthday, proclaiming she wish he’d never been born.  “Careful the things you say…children will listen.”

Heartbreaking.

5.

The bloom has fallen off the Jukebox musical rose.

And the “Desperate Housewives” rose while we’re at it.

4.

You’re still wondering why “Sondheim On Sondheim” was costumed to look like an episode of TLC’s “What Not To Wear.”  All those patterns and Target poly-blend cardigans!  Clinton Kelly where were you?

(P.S. Leslie Kritzer can wear a wardrobe  harvested from “Hoarders” and she’d still be a freakin’ superstar.  Someone write that woman a starring role.  Now.  Thank you.)

3.

You feel deeply that if he just spent five minutes with you, Sean Hayes would be your best friend for life, you’d share a witty repartee, you’d know all the same show tunes and he’d take you away for vacations to his Los Angeles mansion like a big, beautiful bottle of Calgon.

2.

You just know someone’s writing “Twilight: The Musical” and that’s just not okay.  “Five hundred, twenty five thousand six hundred decades…”

1.

Heidi Blickenstaff still sings the best summer song “A Way Back To Then” from “Title Of Show“:

Dancing in the backyard
Kool-aid moustache and butterfly wings
Hearing Andrea McArdle sing
From the hi-fi in the den
I’ve been waiting my whole life
To find a way back to then…

- Jeff Bowen (music & lyrics)

  1. Marilyn Roscoe says:

I really loved the Twilight books, but the movies are only okay. I can’t imagine a musical!

  2. William E. Bowen says:

Your nod to the best summer song, A Way Back to Then implies that Jeff Bowen wrote the music and Hunter Bell wrote the lyrics. (Not So!) Jeff wrote the music and the lyrics for every song in the show. The only song in the entire show he collaborated with was “Die Vampire Die”. Susan helped with the lyrics. “A Way Back To Then” was written by Jeff for Heidi to perform and was originated by Jeff asking Heidi to open up about her childhood in California and what she did while aspiring to be a singer and perform on stage. The song was written overnight.

Thanks for the correction, Bill! I’ve made it to my post and my bleary-eyed memory. Cheers, Julie
